ELECTRICITY regulators, such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), do not understand the industry they oversee, EnergyAustralia managing director George Maltabarow says.

He made the comment after taking part in a seminar in Sydney, hosted by EnergyAustralia, for the think tank group known as the International Utility Workgroup.

The group comprises companies that supply electricity to 118 million customers in major cities including London, Paris, Shanghai, Tokyo and New York.

Mr Maltabarow said ACCC officials did not understand electricity network owners had to be rewarded for investing in changes to help customers better manage their power use.
